What does the F-Gas phase down mean for my site?
EU regulations are progressively restricting the use of high Global Warming Potential (GWP) refrigerants — including many commonly used gases like R410A. Over time, these refrigerants will become harder to source and more expensive to use.
Under the revised F-Gas Regulation (EU 2024/573), the EU is enforcing a strict phase-down of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), with the aim of completely phasing out the consumption of virgin HFCs by 2050. The regulation heavily restricts the use of high GWP refrigerants in new HVAC and refrigeration equipment.
If your site relies on older refrigerant types, now is a good time to understand your options. We can assess your current systems and advise on the most practical, cost effective path forward.
What are hydrocarbon refrigerants and are they suitable for my site?
Hydrocarbon refrigerants such as propane (R290) and isobutane (R600a) are natural refrigerants with extremely low Global Warming Potential, making them one of the most future proof alternatives to traditional HFCs. They’re already widely used across commercial refrigeration and are increasingly being specified in new HVAC installations.
It’s worth noting that working with hydrocarbon refrigerants requires additional specialist training and updated F-Gas Regulation (FGR) certification – not all engineers or companies hold these qualifications. At AeroClime, our engineers are fully trained and certified to work with hydrocarbon systems, so you can be confident the work is carried out safely and compliantly.
Whether they’re suitable for your site depends on your existing equipment, application, and safety requirements.

Our Customers Say

One of our main process chillers went down, stopping production.
Our usual service provider couldn’t get an engineer out to us urgently, so after a few phone calls I was given the contact details for Andy. He was here within a matter of hours, and didn’t leave until the chiller was back up and running again.
Appreciate the quick response time and all the advice.
Would highly recommend Andy and AeroClime Refrigeration.
